Exploring Uliastai: The provincial capital
Today, we’re heading to Uliastai, the provincial capital situated along the Bogd River, which flows from the sacred Otgontenger mountain. Our first stop is the 108 stupas at Javkhalan Pass, where we can enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills before settling into a cozy local hotel.
Historically, Uliastai is one of the oldest cities and served as a key transit point for caravans traveling between Orgoo (Ulaanbaatar) and Khovd, making use of its strategic location at the confluence of a narrow river valley and the surrounding hills. Founded as a military outpost by the Qing dynasty in the 18th century, it played a vital administrative role in “Outer Mongolia,” overseeing local tribes and significantly influencing the military, economic, and cultural development of the Khalkh and Oirat regions.
