Tour description :

A unique adventure awaits in the beautiful Kharkhiraa and Turgen Mountains, where snow-capped peaks rise above arid plains and crystalline lakes. This region showcases a remarkable variety of landscapes, from cold deserts and desert steppes to lush grasslands, coniferous and deciduous forests, as well as diverse wetlands and marshes. It also features both freshwater and saltwater systems, sand dunes, and even areas of tundra, all dotted with glacial lakes. Furthermore, this area is home to rare wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, argali sheep, and Siberian ibex.
The highlight of our expedition is climbing two remarkable summits: Must Peak (Icy) at 4040m, the highest in the Kharkhiraa range, and Tsagaan Shuvuut (White Bird) at 3496m, a rugged summit in the Turgen range, right by the beautiful Uureg Lake. Both peaks are pristine and relatively less climbed. Must Peak is covered in permanent snow and has some short glaciers, and it’s considered an F+ grade route, perfect for adventurous climbers. Tsagaan Shuvuut is easier to ascend but presents sharp ridges and steep cliffs that offer spectacular views from the summit.
Join us as we tackle these incredible mountains and enjoy the high plateaus, the glacier fields, and the colorful valleys filled with wildflowers in this remote area.

Mt. Must ascent

The ascent and descent of Mount Möst, the highest peak in the Kharkhiraa Mountains, are expected to take a total of 10 hours. The climb is easy at first, giving us a chance to enjoy the beautiful views, but the steep descent requires careful footing. Following our summit endeavor, we will descend back to base camp. Since this area is in the coldest part of Mongolia, climbers should be ready for sudden weather changes, including the chance of snowfall even during the summer months.

Heading north towards Mt. Tsagaan shuvuut (White bird)

After a tasty breakfast, we’ll get into our vehicle and drive along the Khovd River to the beautiful Tsagaan Shuvuut Mountain, located north of Uureg Lake, and close to the border zone. This impressive mountain rises 3,496 meters high and features striking rock formations and steep cliffs. We’ll set up camp by Uureg Lake and head to the mountainside at dawn tomorrow to start our climb.
Uureg Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Uvs region. It sits west of the Great Lakes Depression and northwest of the Uvs Basin, with a depth of 42 meters. Surrounded by semi-desert landscapes, the lake’s salty waters are surprisingly great for swimming. The afternoon is free for swimming and enjoying the surroundings. Overnight in tents.

Climbing day of Mt. Tsagaan shuvuut (3496m)

We will set off early in the morning, departing at 4 AM for our climb of Mt. Tsagaan Shuvuut. The ascent will take a total of 10 hours, navigating rocky debris terrains that include rocky paths, talus fields, and steep sections as we slowly gain elevation. About 200 meters below the summit, we will encounter an area prone to rock avalanches. Since this is an F-grade route ascent, we will be climbing without ropes. However, it may become challenging to traverse the talus field if it is snowy, at which point we will use ropes for safety. At the summit, we will be rewarded with amazing views of Olymp Peak, Deglii Tsagaan Peak (Great White Egret) at 4,096 meters, the tallest mountain in the Turgen Range, and Munguntaiga Mountain, which towers over the border with Russia.
After we descend, we’ll head back to Uureg Lake and spend the night at a tourist ger camp by the lakeshore.
