Arrival in UB and city tour

Upon your arrival in Ulaanbaatar, our local staffs (drivers and guide) will pick you up at the international airport of Chinggis khan. You will be transferred to a centrally located three-star hotel.
At noon, you will be escorted for a guided city tour that highlights the city’s most notable attractions, impressive National History Museum, Sukhbaatar Square and the Parliament building.
As the evening approaches, at 6:00 PM, experience a traditional Mongolian show at Tumen Ekh ensemble, featuring folk dances, contortion, and khoomii, the unique throat singing, followed by a welcome dinner.

Early in the morning, we will visit Gandan Monastery, the religious center of Mongolia, before leaving the city. There, we will have the chance to watch the peaceful morning prayers of the Buddhist lamas.
Next, we will travel north to Selenge Province to visit Amarbayasgalant Monastery, 360 km. This historic Buddhist site is one of Mongolia’s three most important monasteries, designed in the elegant Manchu architectural style, is set against a breathtaking natural backdrop. A serene landscape of majestic mountains, gentle rivers, and lush forests creates a peaceful sanctuary. Originally built to honor Zanabazar, the First Bogd, a respected spiritual leader, the monastery once housed around 2,500 monks, serving as a center for worship and learning.
Upon arrival at the site, we will set up our camp. You can spend the afternoon immersing yourselves in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner and have a restful night in the tented camp.

Explore the extinct volcano Uran togoo

In the morning, we’ll explore the Amarbayasgalant Monastery, a place of tranquility and historical significance. After our visit, we will travel to Erdenet, a charming town with a distinctly Russian feel, home to Mongolia’s largest open-pit copper mine, one of the major economic centers of the country.
Next, we’ll venture to Uran Togo Uul, which rises 1,686 meters above sea level. This stunning site features an impressive caldera, measuring 500-600 meters across, and contains a serene lake that is 20 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep, all nestled within a lush forest. The mountains here last erupted during the Quaternary period, becoming dormant approximately 20,000 to 25,000 years ago, making Uran Togo Uul a fascinating geological landmark.

Lake Khuvsgul: The blue pearl of Mongolia

Upon our arrival in Moron City, the lively provincial capital, we will visit a local market to gather supplies and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.
Next, we’ll head to Khuvsgul Lake, famous for its stunning crystal-clear waters. As the largest and deepest freshwater lake in Mongolia, Khuvsgul holds about 1% of the world’s freshwater reserves and is one of the world’s 17 ancient lakes, estimated to be over 2 million years old.
The area around the lake is home to diverse wildlife and is shaped by natural forces like earthquakes and erosion. Today is yours to savor at your leisure. Spend your time relaxing, reading your favorite book, or capturing the stunning scenery with your camera. For those seeking adventure, a 1-2 hour horseback ride awaits! You’ll journey to the lakeside and nearby mountains, where you can take in panoramic views of the lake and, if fortunate, spot some diverse wildlife. The lake region is famous for its rich flora, particularly the edelweiss that blankets the landscape.
After lunch, embark on a picturesque boat tour to capture memorable photos of local reindeer families that come from the Taiga (boreal forests), migrating to the edges of Khuvsgul Lake only in mid-summer for their livelihood, as Khuvsgul Lake is one of the most important pillars of tourism in the region, offering a unique glimpse into their world.

Journey to the Khangai regions: A Beautiful Stop at Zuun Lake

On our way back to Moron city, we’ll take a brief detour to Uushigiin Uvur, an archaeological site of great significance that features the tallest deer stone in Mongolia, crafted by nomadic civilizations from the Bronze to the Iron Age. This remarkable complex includes approximately 30 deer stones, along with cairns and ritual structures, making it one of the largest collections of deer stones in the Euro-Asian region.
Afterward, we will make our way southwest, where the majestic Khangai Mountains cradle the expansive steppes. As we traverse the mountains, we’ll encounter rushing streams, gentle hill passes, and lush forests.
As the sun begins to set, we’ll finally arrive at the serene Zuun Lake, a breathtaking saltwater haven and a paradise for nature enthusiasts, home to numerous birds. Our campsite for the night will be located close to this tranquil lake, just 13 kilometers north of Shine-Ider village.

Khorgo volcano and Terkhiin Tsagaan lake (white lake)

After enjoying a peaceful breakfast at our campsite by the lakeside, drive to Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, known as the Great White Lake, one of the nine wonders of the Arkhangai region. Nestled in the Khangai Mountains, this stunning freshwater lake was formed by volcanic activity and is surrounded by the rocks of the Khorgo volcano. It stretches 16 kilometers in length, is 6 kilometers wide, and has a depth of 20 meters.
This beautiful spot is a true gem of the area and serves as a refuge for many bird species during migration. The surrounding lush hills and young forests provide ideal nesting and resting areas for various waterfowl, including ducks and geese that visit the lake.

Today, we stay at the same family-run guesthouse as we explore this volcanic region, beginning with a nice breakfast. Our hike will take us to the summit of Khorgo volcano, where we can marvel at the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Standing at 2,060 meters above sea level, Khorgo is Mongolia’s youngest volcano, having last erupted around 9,000 years ago. Its striking double crater measures 200 meters wide and over 100 meters deep. The slopes are adorned with lush larch trees, adding vibrant beauty to the scenery. This area, shaped by distinctive pillow lavas, serves as a stunning reminder of its fiery geological past. Our day concludes with a leisurely stroll around the lake, soaking in the picturesque surroundings

Road to Ikh Ulaan Shivert hot springs

We’re embarking on a new day of discovery, to its volcanic-origin hot springs. Along the way, we’ll visit an archaeological site in the Ikh Tamir river valley, where centuries-old reindeer stones and Bronze Age petroglyphs tell the story of a bygone era. As we traverse the rolling hills and towering mountains of the Khangai range, we’ll arrive at the Ikh Ulaan Shiver resort.
This area is known for its hot springs, rich in hydrogen sulfide, which are renowned for their numerous healing properties. We’ll indulge in a relaxing soak in the various pools, rejuvenating both body and mind.

Kharkhorin: Diving into the History of the Mongol Empire

Today, in direction of Kharkhorin city, covering a distance of 140 km, the ancient imperial city of the Mongol Empire from the 13th century until its destruction by Chinese Ming Dynasty troops in the late 14th century. Upon arrival, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the Erdene Zuu Monastery, the first significant Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, founded by Abtai Khan in the 16th century. This monastery, surrounded by Buddhist stupas, was partially destroyed during the communist era. We will take time to explore its stunning architecture and tranquil grounds.
In the afternoon, we will visit the Kharkhorin Museum, where we can learn about the rich history of the Mongol Empire and Genghis Khan.
In the evening, will settle into a twin-shared ger camp, a cozy accommodation where you will sleep in gers that are furnished to resemble inviting hotel rooms.

Drive to Bayan Gobi: a camel ride amidst the Dunes

In the morning, we will visit the ‘Erdenesiin Khuree’ calligraphy center, which focuses on preserving and promoting Mongolian calligraphy. Visitors can participate in workshops (which require advance scheduling and have a fee), explore exhibitions, and learn about the history and techniques of this art form.
Then, we will take a short drive covering a distance of 80 km to Khogno Khan Reserve, where we can enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Mongolia and the grandeur of the Gobi Desert. This area features lush grasslands, surprising sand dunes, and impressive rock formations in the Khogno Khan mountains.
When we arrive at a local family’s home, we’ll be welcomed with their warm hospitality and then enjoy a camel ride for about 1-2 hours in the golden dunes. After our adventure, we’ll spend the night in a traditional ger, fully immersed in the charm of Mongolian culture.
