Just a few kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, you will find Terelj National Park, known for its unique rock formations and alpine-like mountains. This park features a variety of plants like edelweiss and rhododendron, along with rushing streams and green pastures, making it an ideal spot for hiking and horseback riding. The adventure begins with a visit to the impressive Genghis Khan Statue, followed by exploring Terelj National Park. After a gentle hike to Aryaval Temple, you can relax for the night in a cozy ger camp. This trek will be accompanied by local herders and their yaks, who will carry all of our gear on the yak cart. We will hike through typical Mongolian steppes, the mountains of Khan Khentii, larch forests, marshlands, and several rivers. We’ll finish our trek at the home of a nomadic family, where you’ll experience the warm hospitality of the Mongolian people. This tour offers a perfect blend of adventure and culture, providing a true escape into nature.
This trek is suitable for families, moderate hikers, and anyone wanting to explore the beautiful landscapes of Mongolia.
Drive to Genghis Khan Statue and Terelj National Park
This morning, we will depart Ulaanbaatar early and travel 60 km east to visit the majestic equestrian statue of Genghis Khan on Tsonjin Hill. Lunch will be at one of the local restaurants in the area. After lunch, we’ll continue our journey to Terelj National Park, a place marked by its natural beauty, interesting rock formations, and forests of pine and larch, along with the wildflowers of the taiga and forest zones.
Along the way, we will stop at Turtle Rock before heading to Aryaval Temple, a meditation temple nestled at the foothills of a granite mountain. We will hike for about an hour there.
In the afternoon, we will settle into a twin-shared ger camp, a cozy accommodation where you will sleep in gers that are furnished to resemble inviting hotel rooms.

Beginning of 4 days yak cart trek
After a delightful breakfast, we will drive to a herder family, crossing the Terelj River along the way. Upon arriving at the family’s home, we will meet our guests as well as our yak and horse guides. We will load our belongings for the four-day trek, including all kitchen and camping equipment, onto the yak carts, which will be guided by our skilled horsemen. These yak carts are a key element of Mongolian herding culture, traditionally used by herders for collecting water, wood, and transporting their luggage during migrations.
Today, we will trek along the Terelj River through a fertile valley inhabited by nomads and their livestock. During the hike, we will enjoy a picnic lunch in nature. We will camp near Sambartai Khoshuu. Once we arrive at our campsite, we will unload the yaks and set up our camp.

To Gunjiin temple, Manchurian princess’s sanctuary
We continue our trek deep into the park. In the heart of dense pine forests, we find the remnants of the Gunj Temple, partially destroyed by communist soldiers in the mid-1930s.
In 1699, the daughter of the Manchu Qing Emperor married into the noble Dondovdorj family and moved to the Khalkha region. She passed away around 1740, leaving a heartfelt will that stated, “I have married a Mongolian man and lived my life as a Mongolian. Please bury me in Mongolian soil.”
In the afternoon, we ascend to a cluster of rocks called Khuuhai Chuluut. Then, we make our way to the Baruunbayan River, where we set up our yurt campsite.
