Join us for an unforgettable climbing expedition to the Tsambagarav (4209m) and Sair (3984m) mountains in the remote Altai region of western Mongolia. This adventure offers not only challenging climbs but also a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in local cultures and interact with various Mongolian ethnic groups, including traditional eagle hunters who will share their unique way of life.
The majestic snow-capped peaks are accessible via F+ grade route, providing a chance to scale two iconic and revered mountains of the Altai. Climbing Tsambagarav Mountain is best from April to September, featuring a challenging ascent of approximately 1757 meters from the base camp. You’ll trek through impressive glaciers and scenic landscapes, fully equipped with crampons and mountaineering gear.
Sair Mountain serves as a sanctuary for rare wildlife, including the snow leopard and ibex, highlighting the region’s rich biodiversity. This journey is not only a physical challenge but also an opportunity to appreciate the natural wonders and wildlife of Mongolia.


Arrival in UB and city tour

Upon your arrival in Ulaanbaatar, our local staffs (drivers and guide) will pick you up at the international airport of Chinggis khan. You will be transferred to a centrally located three-star hotel.
At noon, you will be escorted for a guided city tour that highlights the city’s most notable attractions, impressive National History Museum, Sukhbaatar Square and the Parliament building.
As the evening approaches, at 6:00 PM, experience a traditional Mongolian show at Tumen Ekh ensemble, featuring folk dances, contortion, and khoomii, the unique throat singing, followed by a welcome dinner.

Flight to Khovd: A Unique Escape in Mongolia

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Khovd City, , a cradle of many ethnic groups in Western Mongolia. Departures are scheduled for either early this morning or in the afternoon.
Following a 2,5-hour domestic flight, your support team (drivers, cooks, and guides) will welcome you. Then we will head towards majestic Mount Tsambagarav mountain. At the end of 2 hour’s drive, we will reach the summer camp of nomadic families, the Namarjin valley. Set up our camp near family’s camp.
Spend your afternoon experiencing local life with a nomadic family. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner and relax for the night in the tented camp.

Towards the Tsambagarav mountain: setup base camp

In the morning, we will spend time with the family and enjoy lunch together with our hosts before heading to the Tsambagarav mountain. Once we arrive, we’ll set up base camp and get settled in. Then we’ll prepare our climbing clothes and gear, ensuring that we’re ready for a safe climb.

Day 4-5: Climbing day of Mt. Tsambagarav (4209m), with a spare day for weather

The climb will take about 12 to 13 hours, covering both the ascent and return to base camp. We’ll start our adventure at 4 AM, roped together for safety as we tackle the rocky terrain, which can be prone to avalanches. When we reach the snowy sections, we will need to gear up with crampons. The total elevation gain is 1,757 meters.
At the summit, enjoy magnific views of the snow-peaked Altai and Kharkhiraa ranges, as well as Sair Khairkhan Mountain to the south, which we will climb in 2-3 days. After taking in the beautiful scenery, we’ll descend and return to base camp for an overnight stay in tents.

Drive to Sair Khairkhan mountain

After breakfast, we will set off for Mount Sair, driving for about 2 hours to reach the mountain’s foothills. Located in the Bayan-Olgii Province near Tolbo town, Mount Sair is home to wildlife such as snow leopards, ibex, and argali, along with various rare medicinal plants. The mountain features permanent snow and glaciers, which are important indicators of climate change. It stands at an elevation of 3,971 meters above sea level. Set up the base camp and prepare for tomorrow’s climbing day.

Summit day for Mount Sair Khairkhan (3984)

On summit day, we will have a moderate climb that takes about 8 to 9 hours. We will encounter different types of terrain, including loose rocks and rocky debris with minimal snow. The total elevation gain will be between 600 and 700 meters. After we descend, we will travel to the Olgii city and check into a nice hotel to relax after an exciting day. Olgii, the capital of Bayan-Olgii province, is a vibrant region inhabited by the Kazakh, Tuvan, and Uriankhai peoples. Once we arrive, you can explore the local market and visit the regional museum.

Visit a Kazakh Eagle Hunter’s Family in Sagsai

Today, we’ll drive to Sagsai village, home to traditional eagle hunters. We’ll visit a Kazakh family renowned for their ancient skill of hunting with Golden Eagles. Although the actual hunting happens in winter, you’ll have the chance to meet the eagle hunter, take photos with the beautiful eagle, and learn about their way of life.
In the evening, we’ll arrive back in Olgii in time for dinner and will stay overnight at the same hotel.

Transfer to Olgii Airport, where we will board our return flight to Ulaanbaatar. Once you arrive, check in at your hotel. You will have free time for the rest of the day. In the evening, we will come together for a dinner.
